ASUS Routers Displaying "MSFT 50"

What it Means and How to Fix It

Users have noticed that their ASUS routers are displaying "MSFT 50" in the client list, along with high data usage. This is due to a DNS probing feature in the Merlin firmware that sends DNS queries to "msftconnecttest.com" to determine internet connectivity. This can be fixed by updating the firmware to version 38066 or later, which includes a fix for this issue.

PC Name Changes to "MSFT 5 0"

Cause and Solution

Some users have also reported that their PC names have changed to "MSFT 5 0" on their own. This is likely caused by a similar DNS probing feature in the router's firmware. To fix this, change the hostname of the PC back to the desired name in the network settings.
